Livestock/Dog Kennel

Livestock/Dog Kennel

A very unusual and very cool "Spratts Shippers of Livestock" gated kennel with original canvas liner; there is also a Capetown South Africa address stamped to the side - presumably a destination of said "livestock". Original handles etc and iron rings to the back to secure during transport.

Originally from the USA, James Spratt developed dog food after seeing stray dogs feeding off hard biscuits discarded from the ships at the docks. His dog food was made from wheat-meal mixed with rendered meat and vegetable which was then baked. "Spratts Patent Ltd" was the maker of dog food and other preparations for dogs, cats, birds. etc., of Poplar, East London.   They also became well known for transporting dogs and other animals via LiveStock Ships to the US, Canada and Africa.  In 1876 Charles Cruft left college and became an employee of  James Spratt, soon being promoted to travelling salesman. In 1891  Cruft set up the Crufts Dog Show  in London. In the 1900s Spratts dog biscuits were sold throughout Europe and the USA.
